Rough Sketch
for Man-Cave Mural

Note: Client wanted to incorporate a 'bat signal' in the night sky.
The trick was not using the actual copyrighted bat signal
but rather creating a signal using not a bat
but the first letter of his name-in this case-an 'M.'

Color Sketch
for Matt-Signal Mural

Note: I really wanted to create the illusion the wall
had been blown out and the cityscape was revealed beyond.

And of course..the 'Matt-Signal' had to be shining in the sky.

2 RHINOS
PILOT Precise V7 on Drawing Paper

Rhinos, to me, are like giraffes.
They're not the prettiest things but there is just something about them...can't really explain it. They have so much character and charm.

The final design of the bee.

I'm really proud of this character.
The posture-the attitude-is exactly what I wanted.

Bees don't have teeth-but the smile-the gap between his teeth-
just a little touch that brings this character to life.

The stem and bee were two different illustrations.
Adding the ladybug to the leaf was a call-back to the All Audience Show poster
and the ladybug playground equipment.

CREATING A SHOW POSTER

Client: WEST END COMEDY

Character Studies for Ladybug Playground Toy

Even though the object in question is an inanimate object, I wanted it to have a life of its own...to become...in a sense ...a character. That's one of the reasons I eliminated the children from the design-it was becoming too busy. Plus, with the children riding the ladybug, it was clear it was a piece of equipment.
I wanted the image to stand on its own.
I wanted it to be engaging and to say 'Yes. This is a show for everyone."

Character Studies for Bee

The beginning designs were too wasp-like...too sharp. The attitude of the character was right. I just needed to refine body shape and facial expression.

There was an serious effort on my part to get the bee's face just right

The facial expression had to be just right. Cute-without being too cute as well as conveying the tone of a mature comedy show.

I based my design of the bee on circles.
There are theories that circles create friendlier characters.
Did you ever notice how Mickey Mouse is created out of several circles?
 His body, head, ears...all circles.

I figured what's good for Ub Iwerks is good enough for me.

The Two Final Posters
(Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop)

I like that there are similarities between the two designs.
~The letter 'I' has been replaced by another design element in both
~The main element in the All Audience poster is a ladybug-there is a ladybug on the leaf for the poster for the mature show.

My Obsession
With Giraffes
PILOT Precise V7

I don't draw giraffes all the time. So...in retrospect, maybe obsession was too strong a word to use.

I'm sure all artists get on kicks about a particular subject.
I remember being fascinated with castles at one point and today have over 100 drawings of mystical and magical castles. Lots and lots of stippling!
Oh the misspent days of my youth!

That was also my dragons period.
No. I won't be posting those any time soon.

Giraffes are just fun to draw. They are all neck and then this big head.
So much character. So much fun to play around with...
